PRESERVATION PROGRAMS

LEON COLLINS PRESERVATION PROJECT

Tap Dance is an American dance genre that evolved over 300 years, reaching its artistic peak in the 1930s and 40s. Among the legendary artists who shaped this form, Leon Collins stands out as a tap virtuoso who brought a fresh perspective to the art. Blending elements of jazz and classical music, Collins emphasized melody - not just rhythm - creating a musicality and clarity that defined his signature style. As he believed, “Dancing is the poetry of the body as music is the poetry of the soul.”

Known for his clean, articulate footwork and his unique focus on melodic line, Collins developed eight masterful educational routines that captured the full spectrum of his tap vocabulary. These routines remain some of the most respected and widely studied works in the tap community.

Collins passed his artistic legacy to his protégé, Dianne Walker - internationally celebrated as “The First Lady of Tap.” Ms. Walker has carried forward his teachings with extraordinary dedication. In a tremendous honor, she has selected Brenna Kuhn and Art Beat Dance Center as one of the few chosen homes entrusted with the preservation, instruction, and continued performance of the Leon Collins catalogue.

The Art Beat Foundation is committed to safeguarding this important piece of tap history - ensuring that the Collins repertoire is taught with integrity, celebrated through performance, and kept alive for future generations of dancers. Through the Leon Collins Preservation Project, we honor the lineage, artistry, and timeless musicality that continue to inspire tap dancers around the world.
